South Huntington UFSD construction project halted: Tens of thousands of fishes and amphibians rescued

After South Huntington Union Free School District began draining a sump for repairs, residents raised concerns about the plethora of animals who called the sump home. Humane Long Island made contact with decisionmakers who immediately agreed to halt the project while we got to work safely relocating the sump’s inhabitants.
After five filthy days of wading—at times waist deep—in muck and mud, our rescue effort yielded tens of thousands of tadpoles and minnows, over a thousand goldfish with beautiful fan tails and vibrant colors, and more than 100 gorgeous frogs. The wild fish and frogs were safely relocated to natural ponds nearby while the goldfish were safely relocated to private ponds in the surrounding area.
